Whitewater Activities &
Waterfalls
How about North Carolina whitewater Nantahala,
boating or tubing? More Whitewater rafting.

visitor some of the areas most magnificent waterfalls. A great book by Kevin Adams, called "North Carolina Waterfalls", gives you directions to most area waterfalls.
Where to Dine in
Maggie Valley
Whether you're
staying at the Walch Smoky Mountain Creekside Retreat or Walch Pond View Retreat --- we're sure
you'll want to check out the Shopping and Dining in the Maggie Valley. While we have not visited them all by far, some of
our favorites are Snappy's - Primarily Italian food with an excellent selection with
regular or large "Snappy" sized portions! This is a very economical and
good for families. J. Arthurs' restaurant is just down the road at the entrance to
Highway 19 and is great for a special meal. This is probably the nicest restaurant
in the area. Prices are on the high end but J. Arthurs' is a very nice dining
experience if you're looking for something special. We are also fond of Maggies'
Gallery in Waynesville. This is an authentic Log Cabin from an earlier time which
has a wide menu selection at reasonable prices. Arf's restaurant in Maggie Valley on
Highway 19 sits along Jonathan's Creek and offers a great local blackened trout with salad
bar for at a reasonable price.
Golfing Activities
While in the Mountains,
what better leisure activity than a round of golf. Play a round at The Maggie Valley Golf & County Club.
The Great Smoky Mountain Trails site has
"links" to most NC Mountain Golf Courses. While your family is off on their
activity, check out the Golf Courses and Pro Shops in North
Carolina.
Do you want to see the Seasons Change?
Blooming wildflowers, plants and trees make the
Smoky Mountains special all times of the year. The Bloom Schedule is a great guide.
Fall in Maggie Valley is a wonderfull time. The changing colors of the area leaves is a
matter of Simple
Chemistry of Autumn Colors. Drive the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway Appalachians, North Carolina.
For the most current update on where the leaves are peaking, check out The Weather Channel
maps Fall Foliage across the Nation for the
predicted best time of year.
Fishing in the Smokies
Fishing has been a part
of the historic use of Great Smoky Mountains National Park since its creation. Great Smoky
Mountains National Park Fishing. Another fishing source can be found at Trout Unlimited.
The native brook trout
was originally present in most streams above 2000 feet elevation. Extensive logging
operations in the early 1900's caused contamination of over 160 miles of clear mountain
streams eliminating the brook trout from about 50% of its original range.
Most of the streams in
the area are home of the native Brook Trout and have been supplemented by the Brown and
Rainbow trout. Local ponds and lakes are also home to the smallmouth and rock bass.
A great local book on trout fishing is Smoky
Mountains Trout Fishing Guide by Don Kirk 1985 Menasha Ridge Press, Route 3 Box 450,
Hillsborough, North Carolina 27278. Check out Books on Trout fishing and
other trout fishing books can be found here.
